Thursday, Jun 23, 2011 at 1:06 p.m.

It's a sports story you haven't heard, about how sport can transform society and overcome racism. Join Kojo for an exploration of one of his passions: West Indian cricket

From the late 1970s to the early 1990s, the West Indies dominated the world of cricket. No team was more feared, or fearsome, than the 11 cricketers plucked from disparate Caribbean nations. Their talent united the islands, transformed the style of cricket and became a metaphor for nations struggling under racism and oppression. Kojo explores their story, captured in the new documentary "Fire in Babylon."

Dish Warriors (Warriors Youth) reach the Semi-Finals of the T10 SEWA charity tournament

DISH Warriors(Warriors Youth) reach the semi final of the T10 ICCS SEWA Charity Tournament.

Dwayne Hoffman, Shrimant Jharuhar, Kausam Kumar and the students of Annandale High(Qasim Jamal, Mujtaba Zaidi, VJ Khokar, Adil Hussain, Hamim Rafi, Wahab Gull, Muhhamad Adeel and Hendell de La Cruz)took the field as Dish Warriors.

Match Report:
Dish Warriors Surprise at the SEWA Cricket Tourney

Under a cloudy sky that gave way to hot and humid conditions, the youth cricket element of the Washington Warriors competed in a 12 team round robin for the SEWA charity. Captained by American-born Dwayne Hoffman, the multi-ethnic team had players of Pakistani, Indian, and Hispanic descent. Also in attendance were two teachers of the students inlcuding Bethany Slingerland who is the coordinated the Warriors Youth from Annandale High, Saurabh, the captain of the senior team, Shrimant, Kausam, and Suresh and Srinivas Neelapala, the president and vice-president of the Washington Warriors.

Game 1

We started proceedings against the Challengers. After winning the toss, the Captain immediately asked for a bat. We sent in two aggressive batsman who started scoring at more than a run a ball. After the loss of the first wicket, the Captain walked in and rotated the strike playing an anchoring role as we took many runs from byes and wides. The team's run rate accelerated after the Captain retired, with boundaries and maximums flying over square leg and mid-wicket. At the end of our allocation we had scored 87 runs, on a wicket that the umps thought that 50 was a par score.

In reply we bowled magnificently, and had a chance for a hat trick to boot. The fielding was crisp, and there were stumping chances taken with zeal and passion. We did not concede a run until the 9th ball, and didn't give up a wide until nearly the 3rd over was over. We won comfortably, with a run rate nearly 2.5 runs an over over par.
Game 2

We faced the Germantown XI in game on a wicket that didn't have as much variable bounce in it, but had a short-side legside boundary. We lost the toss, and we fielded. Once again, the bowling was excellent, gaining key wickets at pivotal times, including yet another hat-trick opportunity. We held them to a mere 57 runs, and felt confident that we could win.

In replay, we sent in our most aggressive batsman, who was swinging and connecting on many deliveries. After two overs, we had scored 26 runs, and after three, 33. Then, we started losing wickets at awkward times. Shrimant came in to steady the innings, but got out to a well-placed fielder. The Captain came in with four wickets down and 14 runs needed with a nervous team on the sidelines. Thankfully, some disciplined batting, a well timed six, and wides got the team to a tying position, when the Captain dragged one off the bottom edge onto middle stump. The next batsman two balls later took a quick single, leaving his bat in due haste to get to the non-striker side, and the runner coming towards the danger end scampered home - the team ran in from the sidelines and we had a long wait.

The tourney was based on net run rate, so we had to wait almost 2.5 hours to find out if we had done enough. Luckily there were exactly four teams that had won twice. We were third (!) and had scored a ton of runs.

Semifinals

We won the toss, and the team asked to bowl first, feeling confident we could chase down a total. The Captain agreed, and in the field we went. Unfortunately for us, our opponents started hitting most of their strokes over the top of square leg and mid-wicket for sixes - at one time it felt like it was raining sixes! Each time we got a wicket or two (yet again, we had a hat trick opportunity!) they hit a maximum. At the end of their inning, we had to chase a total of 133 - and that was with not that many wides either.

In replay we started slowly, and could never get going. The bowling was disciplined and crafty. We had one spell where we hit four 6's in a row, but it was too little, too late.

From the Captain, Dwayne Hoffman:

"The team today performed well above the collective expectation. Some of these students had never played a game of outdoor cricket before, yet they performed better than many adults who had played for over 30 years! The best part of the day was the espirit de corps and courtesy that was shown to all players; they reminded many individuals that cricket is a game of decorum and respect through their superior conduct.

I have been privileged to captain teams in sporting events before, but this team was one of the best all-around teams I have ever been associated with. It would be wrong to single out one or two individuals, for each and every member made a positive and distinct contribution to our success.

Today was another step in the furthering of cricket in the Northern Virginia area, and in the United States. It is my hope that this great sport took hold in some people today in the country that I have defended proudly, and love completely. Well done to the teachers and students for a comprehensive effort, and to our sponsors, Dish Network, for providing valuable support in this venture."

Warriors demonstrate Cricket to Herndon Middle School.

The Washington Warriors arrived at the Herndon Middle School to find a loudly cheering group of middle schoolers. It was quite clear that they were all excited to learn about the sport. The gymnasium presented some challenges to setting up the projector and the clip we planned to show. But, we figured out a way. About 60 or so middle schoolers filtered in and sat on the bleachers. You could tell, they were very excited. Suresh kicked off the session introducing ourselves and provided a brief history of the sport in United States. Srini then explained some of the basics- batting, bowling etc and compared and contrasted cricket with baseball. Dwayne talked briefly about his experiences and Y rounded the session by showing the clip we had prepared.

We proceeded to enact a few plays to show how the game is played. When it was finally the turn of the students to jump in, they did so in a very excited fashion. Soon they were bowling, batting and running in the gym.

It was a great experience for us and we were completely bowled by their interest. We took some time to help the PE instructors understand the game, answered questions, and gave a cricket kit each to Herndon Middle School and Langston Hughes Middle Schools.

The County PE Coordinator for schools, PE instructors from Herndon Middle school and Langston Hughes Middle school was present and now are interested in having the Warriors do similar demos to a much larger audience.

Feels good to be one of the organizations that is helping cricket in America at the grass root level.

The Washington Warriors!!

Himalayan Cricket Club will be the
 "WASHINGTON WARRIORS" in 2011

2010 Trophy winners

HCC News:Himalayan represented in the WCL Executive Committee

Suresh elected Executive Secretary of WCL for 2011-2013.

HCC enters the T20 play offs on a 5 game unbeaten streak.!!!!

Even before we started the game we knew we were through to next round :).. Bengals lost to Elite by a huge margin which comfortably placed our team in next round.

PWCC - 119 all out in 18 overs. The game was reduced since the earlier game went over the time.
Pwcc won the toss and elected to bat. They started well with their openers putting a decent partnership. Once we got their first 2, the rest tumbled. First one was taken by Gupta. Batsman had no clue how the ball went and hit the wkt. Then Saurabh sent their opener back, well caught by Deepak H. Saurabh got one more. Venkat as usual ripped their batting order with 4 wkts, Kundal got 2, and Y got 1.

Anna and Saurabh started our innings. Saurabh got out trying to play square cut, then Srini joined Anna, both put 60 runs together. Anna got out, Syed joined Srini and put up a 40 run partnership, It took us close to target. Syed hit a huge six of a full toss and suddenly the game seemed to be decided. When it was run a ball needed, Syed got out trying to go for a second run. Second last over, Srini got out trying to hit the ball for four. Kundal was the next one to go. The equation was still at run a ball. Last over read like this, 7 runs in 6 balls 5 wickets in hand. Deepak H hit a shot which was a six, fielder pops out the catch to six but calls it in and didn't give a six or a four, there were 2 taken on that. So 5 of 5 needed. A dot ball and a single from Deepak G brought the equation to 4 runs in two balls. H sends to ball towards the boundary and the fielder gets to it and cut the boundary. We needed 2 of last ball. Deepak H hit and ran for single and the score was tied.

HCC wins by wickets with the scores leveled !!!!

Srini - 33(40), Syed - 30 (21), Suresh N (29 (22), Venkat - 4 wkts, Saurabh and Kundal - 2 each, Deepak G and Suresh Y - 1 each.
H - 1 catch and 1 stumping, Srini & Kundal - 1 catch.

Himalayan Thrashes Bengals2 in 20/20

Match report:

At 11 am we were only 5 at ground so we waited for 3 more to join us, at 11:40'ish we were 8 so the game starts then. Ofcouse bengals won the toss by default and we had bowl. Srini got the first 3 batsman out for less score, then Syed pick up the 4'th wkt, his very first ball. Venkat and Suresh Y joins the fun around 8'th over,, our golden arm, venkat starts at one end soon and picks up wkt in his very first over. One runout between nirun/Suresh N, Venkat bowls a swinger and
disturbs the timber to get his second, he gets one more lil later. Suresh Y took one, .. we got them all out for 114. Kundal playing with a backsupport took a great low catch.

We had to finish our quota of overs by 12:40, assuming we start at 11. But our bowling obviously goes over our time limit. Because of all the delays the target was reset to a high score, we had to chase 157 in 20 overs.

Saurabh/Suresh N opens: Suresh N sends second ball of their inning flying over the boundary. And from there on no turning back,, it was a sixes rain...bengals had no clue what hit them. By the time they regained their consious the damage was done, we were crusing towards the Win. Suresh N (sizzling knock, 20'ish balls 58 runs (5 or 6 x6's). Saurabh got out early, Srini added some runs (22 runs). We were 117/3 in 10'ish overs, when Srini and sushant went out to get water. Kundal and Syed were in middle keeping the scores busy.

By the time srini & sushant returned the game was over with Syed hitting a huge six. After 117 looks like syed flashed his new aero thigh gaurds (some one mentioned, International players and Syed use, but was corrected as Syed and international players use) that dazzled the bowler
who gave 10 wides in an over that brought us closer to win. Kundal (25* runs) with his aching back and Syed (19* runs) brought us home comfortably. 162/3 in 13-14'sh overs.

Good game guys !!!!!! lot of energy and enthu on the field.. keep it up
!!!!!!!!!!!

Dont spike it!

Be Careful ..dont Spike it !!!
